NASA’s Supersonic Passenger Jets Could Travel 4 Times Faster Than Today’s Planes

Someday in the future, New Yorkers who are craving a spot of afternoon tea or a trip around the London Eye could potentially get across the pond in under 2 hours — less time than it takes to watch many feature-length movies these days. But how?

NASA is investigating the possibility of developing supersonic passenger jets that could travel up to four times faster than current airliners. While today’s commercial planes cruise at around 600 mph, the theoretical speeds from a supersonic jet would be between 1,535 and 3,045 mph. Those numbers correspond to Mach 2 and Mach 4, meaning (much) faster than the speed of sound, which is Mach 1.

The space agency identified about 50 established routes for potential passenger markets, focusing on transoceanic paths across the Atlantic and Pacific. NASA enlisted Boeing and Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems to lead two teams that will each develop concept designs and technology roadmaps for achieving the incredible feat.

Delta to Unveil Foldable Seat Design That Allows Flyers to Stay in Their Wheelchairs

Traveling can be a pain for everyone, but flyers who use wheelchairs face another level of obstacles, from a lack of bathroom accessibility to potential injuries incurred while boarding the plane to the possibility of damaging expensive — and essential — equipment. That last point is a particular problem: According to data from the Department of Transportation, at least 1.5 of every 100 wheelchairs and scooters are mishandled during air travel.

A new plane seat design, being developed by Delta Flight Products and the U.K.-based consortium Air4All, is looking to change that. The seat folds up to reveal a floor latch, allowing passengers with limited mobility to remain securely in their own powered wheelchairs for the duration of the flight, while still maintaining access to the headrest and console tray table.

Have you ever wondered ????

What does “Auld Lang Syne” actually mean?

What are the “Auld Lang Syne” lyrics?

New Year’s quotes can help you celebrate and reminisce, but there’s nothing like singing along with the crowd at midnight to get you in the holiday spirit. Knowing the “Auld Lang Syne” meaning will help you be better prepared to sing it on New Year’s. Here are the English lyrics to all five verses of Burns’s “Auld Lang Syne.”

FIRST VERSE:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

SECOND VERSE:

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
And surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

CHORUS

THIRD VERSE:

We two have run about the slopes,
And picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
Since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

FOURTH VERSE:

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

FIFTH VERSE:

And there’s a hand, my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
For auld lang syne.
