Altered Horizons: America's Soaring Affair with Cannabis and Psychedelics"

In the ever-evolving landscape of American lifestyles, a peculiar trend has taken hold—seeking altered states of mind has become quite the vogue. The notion of experiencing the world without resorting to chemical adjustments seems to be slipping out of fashion, as a growing number of individuals find solace and curiosity in the realm of altered consciousness.
Last year marked a milestone that had been gradually brewing for decades: the use of cannabis and psychedelic drugs among adults in the United States hit unprecedented heights. The source of this revelation was none other than the annual Monitoring the Future study conducted by the University of Michigan. Various factors have converged to shape this transformative shift, including relaxed regulations surrounding these substances, a shifting societal perspective on hallucinogens, and a burgeoning population of Americans seeking to self-medicate for their mental health struggles.
Intriguingly, the statistics concerning cannabis consumption are rather remarkable, painting a vivid picture of this societal transformation. Among young adults aged 19 to 30, an astonishing 44% admitted to partaking in marijuana use within the preceding 12 months. Equally notable, 28% of adults aged 35 to 50 had also joined this growing trend—a record high for both age groups. As if this surge wasn't enough, an even more astonishing revelation unfolded: over 11% of young adults revealed that they had engaged with cannabis on a staggering 20 or more occasions within the past 30 days, a figure that had doubled since a decade prior.
Yet, the canvas of change doesn't end there. The allure of psychedelic experiences has taken center stage as well. A resounding 8% of young adults reported indulging in mind-altering substances like MDMA and psilocybin (commonly known as magic mushrooms) within the past year. This figure, striking in its own right, is more than double the rate recorded in 2012—a clear sign of the seismic shift taking place in society's relationship with these substances.
Nowhere is the rise of psychedelics more evident than in the heart of Silicon Valley, where an intriguing subculture has taken root. Microdosing—consuming tiny amounts of psychedelic substances—has become a staple in the corporate corridors. It's as if the tech elites have traded in their conventional drinks for a more unconventional concoction of ketamine, LSD, and magic mushrooms. These substances, they claim, hold the key to quelling anxiety and sparking revolutionary business ideas. Visionaries like Elon Musk and Google's co-founder Sergey Brin have openly admitted their flirtations with ketamine and psilocybin, showcasing a facet of their lives that extends beyond boardrooms and balance sheets. Even the prestigious VC firm Founders Fund has thrown its weight behind this newfound enthusiasm, hosting parties infused with psychedelic elements—an unexpected blend of innovation and experimentation.
However, the trend isn't confined to the hallowed halls of the tech industry. The landscape of the American workforce is also being colored by this transformation. Last year saw a striking record: the number of employees testing positive for marijuana reached its highest point in a quarter-century, as evidenced by an annual survey conducted by Quest Diagnostics.
Stepping back for a moment, the larger picture comes into focus. More than two-thirds of the states across the nation have embraced either medical or recreational cannabis usage, underscoring a broader acceptance of these substances. Furthermore, the scientific community's growing attention toward psychedelics has yielded intriguing results. In controlled settings, studies have begun to reveal the potential of these substances in addressing mental illnesses. This potential, however, is met with a necessary caution. Experts emphasize the need for a comprehensive exploration of the risks that come hand in hand with the benefits—an uncharted territory that merits thorough investigation.
In the grand tapestry of society's evolution, the surge in cannabis and psychedelic use stands as a testament to the shifting sands of perception and the embrace of the unorthodox. As the journey continues, it remains to be seen how this transformation will shape the future of American culture, medicine, and exploration of the human mind.

Agriculture is why so many people need braces. Braces have become so commonplace in the U.S. that wearing them is almost a rite of passage; data suggests that about 50% of children in the U.S. will need orthodontic treatment at some point, mostly due to misaligned teeth. But that wasn’t always the case. The advent of agriculture changed the human diet, which led to a smaller jaw that no longer has enough space to provide a comfy home for all 32 teeth. Before humans took to the plow around 10,000 BCE, our hunter-gatherer predecessors chowed down on tougher foods, such as uncooked vegetables and hard-shelled nuts, and needed bigger, stronger jaws to munch through them. When farming introduced softer foods into our diet, such as beans and cereals, the need for those beefy jaws declined. Our jaws got smaller over the generations, but human teeth shrank at a much slower rate, resulting in the dental traffic jam experienced by millions of Americans every year.
